Dog Kennels
Flathead Shelter Friends was responsible for raising the funding for renovating the dog kennels at Flathead County Animal Shelter. This renovation created a pass though gate from the kennel to each private outdoor patio. The ability for shelter dogs to have the option to choose whether they want to be indoors or outside is extremely helpful in maintaining the dogs' mental and physical health. The outdoor space also aids in potty training and keeping good bathroom habits. [Press Release]

Get Acquainted
2013
We were so happy to be able to facilitate a "get acquainted" with your new best friend room for potential adoptee dogs and their owners. This provides a quiet, neutral space so getting to know one another is as authentic as possible.

• What you see is what you get! Seniors are full grown and have developed personalities. You will be able to gauge if the pet will fit in at your home, with your family and your environment upon meeting them at the shelter.
• Adaptability - Seniors' experiences will shape how quickly they adapt to their new home, human family and routines. The great news is that senior pets can adapt when given love, time and positive training.
• Seniors have manners! Most are house and/or litter box trained and know basic manners. The pet's history prior to adoption is often known by the shelter.
• You can find the purebred you want and you can also find a pet that you know has lived with and gets along well with small children, other dogs, cats and other animals.
• Unconditional Love - They do know that you are giving them a brand new well-deserved lease on life! Many new owners form a close bond very quickly with their senior dog or cat, because the pet shows them a level of attention and devotion that is unique to older, adopted animals.
• Older pets are less demanding and are relaxing to be with! They are happy to be quieter companions, to humans of all ages. They are much less likely than a boisterous puppy to knock over small children or elderly people.
• Timeframe - It may be scary to adopt, knowing that your new best friend may not live too long. With this comes one of the most rewarding relationships you will ever experience.

Unfortunately, senior pets, both cats and dogs, are less likely to get adopted than their younger shelter-mates. But fortunately, if you are interested in adopting an older dog or cat, there are so many rewarding aspects!
Cat Enclosures
2013 & 2009
FSF made it possible for the cat enclosures at the shelter to be expanded. This doubled the the size of each cat's living space and donated banks of new enclosures for the adoption, kitten, and stray areas. These additional areas are required to be separate for health and safety reasons. [Press Release]

Disaster Building
2016
The constant threat of wildfires inspired our project for 2016. We raised funds to build a disaster preparedness building, including the installation of the building and shelving for the inside. FSF and Flathead County Animal Shelter were able to work with a local builder on the project.
Senior Pet Voucher
2017
The senior pet voucher was created in 2017 from of funds raised in conjunction with the Great Fish Community Challenge. This program provides adopters of senior cats and dogs with a $350.00 voucher for veterinary care at many participating Veterinarians in our county. This program is ongoing and has helped over 100 senior cats and dogs find their forever homes.
